Vincent van Gogh Letters: Now online

A hug collection of Vincent van Gogh's letters is available to read online now, offering an insight into the life story of the famous artist. It covers the years from 1872 to 1890 when, at the age of 37 he committed suicide.

The letters, many of which contain sketches, have been put online to mark a new exhibition, at the Van Gogh museum in Amsterdam, Holand (Dutch). There are 902 letters in the exhibition, all of them can be viewed for free on the www.vangoghletters.org.

Most of the letters are written by Van Gogh himself and many of them were sent to his younger brother, Theo, althoug some are addressed to other significant artist of the period, such as Paul Gauguin. Most of the letters are written in dutch, sometimes French, but on the site the lettershas been translated into english.

Vincent Van Gogh gives a little away about his state of mind, instead describing details of several paintings he was work on. In the last letter he wrote to his younger brother Theo before suicide, he wrote " I am applying myself to my canvases with all my attention, I am trying to do as well as certain painters whom i've like and admired a great deal"
